What Is Gross Pay?
Gross pay is what an employee earns in a pay period before anything gets taken out, no taxes, no benefit deductions, nothing. It's base wages or salary plus whatever else they picked up that period- overtime, a bonus, commission, a shift differential. A server's gross pay might be an hourly base plus tips plus a few overtime hours from a slammed Saturday. A manufacturing employee's gross pay might include a night shift premium on top of their regular rate.
Why does this number matter so much? Because everything else in payroll builds on it. Tax withholding, Social Security and Medicare contributions, benefit deductions, even workers' comp calculations all start from gross pay. Get it wrong, and every number downstream is wrong too.
But there are a lot of things to be done when the number of employees on board gets bigger. What does payroll software do? It does everything through formulas automatically, which means it will not recalculate gross salaries each time the shifts change.
